The photosynthetic bacterium Rhodobacter capsulatus does not lose its ability to metabolize isethionic acid even in strains lacking genes for known isethionic acid metabolizing enzymes, suggesting that there are unknown metabolic enzymes and metabolic pathways. In this project, RNAseq analysis was used to comprehensively search for genes whose expression is specifically induced under culture conditions in which isethionic acid is the sole sulfur source.
